San Francisco Artists for Palestine (SF4P) is proud to announce the debut of Sensing Palestine, a transformative art exhibit opening February 9, 2025, at GRNHS, located at 864 Folsom Street in San Francisco. This unique installation merges visual art, soundscapes, and interactive mediums to bring journal entries from Dottie Lux, a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement to life, providing a deeply moving exploration of the Palestinian experience.
About the Artist and Curator
Dottie Lux, the visionary behind Sensing Palestine, is a graduate of Pratt Institute (Class of 2004) with a 20-year career spanning performance, poetry, visual, and interactive art. A Jewish artist raised in a Zionist environment, she had her Bat Mitzvah on Masada in 1995. Nearly 30 years later, she returned to Palestine with an anti-zionist perspective, working as a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM).
Dottie spent three transformative months in the West Bank, serving as a protective presence with Palestinian families and standing in solidarity with their struggle. This experience profoundly influenced her work, merging her artistic practice with activism to challenge narratives, foster dialogue and encourage global liberation.
In her words: “Palestine is the one issue: it is healthcare, education, climate crisis, human rights, women’s rights, gay rights, the prison industrial complex, and so on.” Through her art, Dottie invites audiences to engage deeply with these intersections and explore the urgent need for justice and liberation.
About the Exhibit
For the past year, SF Artists for Palestine has been transforming art into essential funds for families in Gaza, supporting vital aid like food, shelter, and medical costs while carrying forward a powerful message of solidarity.
From June to August 2024, Dottie Lux joined the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine, working on the ground in the West Bank. Her time there was both heartbreaking and heart blooming, as she bore witness to the brutal realities of apartheid, colonization, and the world’s largest ongoing land grab since the Nakbah.
Sensing Palestine reflects these experiences through an immersive, multi-sensory installation that bridges the gap between distant events and visceral reality. This deeply interactive exhibit brings the brutal realities of occupation into visceral focus while celebrating the resilience and cultural richness of Palestinian communities.
Join the Movement! All artworks created for this project will be for sale, with all money raised supporting ongoing fundraising efforts for families in Gaza. Additionally, 10% of funds from the event will help sustain Dottie's next mission in February 2025, continuing her vital work on the ground.
By attending Sensing Palestine, you’ll not only experience a groundbreaking exhibit but also contribute to a vital cause, standing in solidarity with those resisting genocide and colonization.
